On the 30th of May 2013, the ‘Neighbour Consultation Scheme’ came into effect. This meant you were allowed to build certain types of structures, without applying for Planning Permission, because of ‘Permitted development rights’ granted by Parliament. ‘Permitted development rights’ meant you were allowed to extend a detached property by up to 8 metres and all other property types by up to 6 metres. Rather than applying for Planning Permission, you simply had to consult your neighbours, via the planning office.
This has made extending your property simple…. until now!
From the 30th of May 2019, this scheme ends, meaning your extension must be fully completed on or before that date. Remember you’ll need to leave up to 42 days for your application to be approved under the ‘Neighbour Consultation Scheme’, so you should start planning now if you’re interested in making the most of this increased allowance.
After the 30th of May 2019, you can still get an extension without Planning Permission, if it is smaller than 4 metres for detached homes and 3 metres for all other homes.
