Things to consider when buying a conservatory

Things to consider when buying a conservatory

Considering a conservatory? Let Trent Valley design a beautiful glazed extension for you

Looking for more space? Our expert gives some pointers on what decisions you need to make.

There are a number of classic Conservatory options with traditional shapes like P shape, T shape, Victorian, Edwardian and Orangery. Most people opt for a simple rectangular Edwardian style which creates a very useable room space.

All our conservatories are bespoke designed for you so you can pretty much have anything you want.

Things to consider
What do you want to use the conservatory for?

  • If it’s a dining room, often you will be using it to dine in the evening so the conservatory will need to have adequate lighting.
  • If it’s an additional sitting room are you planning on using existing furniture and do you want walls or window sills to dress?

Remember it’s probably more important to get the internal look & feel right as that’s the part you’re looking at when using your new conservatory. You very rarely spend time admiring your conservatory from the garden, although we guarantee a bespoke conservatory design by one of experts will look fabulous inside & out.

Your flooring & heating choices go hand in hand, if you’re thinking about underfloor heating this works best with a tiled floor as they hold the heat better than a carpet or laminate.

Other heating options include free standing or integrated heaters. Remember any extension to your central heating system will trigger building regulation requirements.

Making your conservatory a useable space year round

One of the most common complaints about old conservatories was that they were only comfortable to use for ½ the year; on sunny days the room becomes far too hot and in the depths of winter it’s far too cold.

With design and technology improvements in recent years we can build a conservatory that is as thermally efficient as a traditional single storey extension.

Keeping the room warm:

  • Much of the heat loss from a conservatory comes from the roof ridge by adding a ridge surfboard it can help to reduce heat loss – ask your sales advisor about the Livin Light which also allows a new range of lighting designs for your extension.
  • Underfloor heating can provide cost efficient heating and can be climate controlled with touch screen heating thermostats.
  • At Trent Valley we use glass from the Pilkington Activ™ range, the range includes reflective and insulating glass. Which type of glass we use will be dependent on the aspect of your conservatory in relation to the sun.

Keeping the room cool:

  • Heat reflective glass. There is a brand new self-cleaning glass available from Pilkington for your roof called Activ Sunshade™ which reflects 80% of the suns’ heat, keeping your room cool on hot sunny days. The double glazed unit outer pane reflects the solar heat and the inner KS pane insulates the room to stop heat escaping.
  • Ventilation. The type of ventilation needed is specific to each conservatory, based on many considerations such as size, shape and aspect. The Ultraframe roof system we use at Trent Valley offers eavesflow ventilation and trickle ventilation in the ridge.
  • A tiled floor can also help to keep your room nice and cool on a hot summer’s day.

Added extra’s that give your new conservatory the wow factor

Add a ceiling pelmet, an insulated pelmet which transforms the inside of your conservatory into an orangery style extension. This real room feel means more styling and furnishing options and the perimeter ceiling is perfect for down lights.

Carefully chosen colours can transform the look of your new conservatory, we offer a wide range of standard & bespoke colours, ask your sales advisor for details.

Make the floor a feature with some stunning porcelain tiles. Now available in ceramic, mosaic, stone and wood effects many have matching outdoor tiles to run the floor seamlessly from a conservatory onto a patio.

Corniche guttering will hide the external guttering giving the conservatory a better cosmetic finish.

Create a beautiful panoramic effect with full width bi-folding patio doors to open up your new conservatory into the garden.

Black Windows & Doors

Here at Trent Valley all our coloured windows & doors are foiled with Renoilt EXOFOL, the world’s market leader in window profile foils.

Foiled frames are guaranteed for 10 years along with the rest of your product, the colour will remain through sun, wind, rain and frost. They are available in many solid colours and wood effect decors. They are industrially and permanently bonded to the plastic profile.

We offer a range of 15 colours including black foil. The Renoilt EXOFOL black that we use is a brown black (RAL 8022). This is due to the fact that a pure black colour is more heat absorbent and as such Renoilt are unable to offer their standard 10 year warranty.

We have several example windows & doors available on display in the showroom.

Problems with your doors?

Due to the extreme high temperatures today and over the next few days, you may experience some difficulties opening, closing & locking your doors. This is due to the natural expansion of the uPVC, we would advise to wait till the door cools once the sun has moved and attempt to open, close and/or lock. Adjustments will not solve the problem.

If you need to secure your property we suggest you try to cool the uPVC frame with water.

BBBBBrrrrrrrrrr … Chilly mornings can mean wet windows

Occasionally you may get condensation forming on the external pane of glass. This is usually visible on cold, clear mornings.

This occurs because modern glass systems are now so efficient at keeping the heat inside the room that the warmth is not able to transfer to the outside pane to heat it up. Look out the window at your car and I bet that’s wet through too.

This is not a product fault and as the daytime temperature rises the external condensation will disappear.

For more details customers can refer to page 6 of their Owner’s Maintenance Guide from Network Veka, which comes with your guarantee and building certificate.

A Guide to Choosing Replacement Windows

There’s a lot to consider when thinking about replacement windows, and as new windows are a major financial investment for most of us it’s important to think carefully about what you want before committing to a purchase. Here Alan, our expert at Trent Valley, outlines the things you may need to contemplate and also talks you through the various options and cost implications.

Considering the options:

Double glazing is available with different frames

Aluminium gives you slimmer lines, with less bulky frames than uPVC so there’s more glazing. You also get a wider choice of colours than uPVC but it is significantly more expensive.

Timber is the traditional look that many people like and if made with a good quality hardwood and maintained well it can be long lasting, this will however be relatively costly. It will be less energy efficient than uPVC and of course needs repainting regularly to maintain its good looks.

uPVC frames are the most cost effective, energy efficient and maintenance free option. Wood grain finishes can give you the look of timber without any maintenance.

 Things to think about:

How do you want your windows to look? Stand outside your home or better still take a picture.

Which room is the window in? You’ll want more ventilation in a kitchen or bathroom. Think about how accessible the window is, can you open/close/clean the window easily.

Style of window – how would you like your window(s) designing. Think about the number of splits (i.e. panes of glass) and how many openers (i.e. panes that open). Remember every opener you have will add to the cost, same with panes. The simpler the design the more cost effective the window. Building regulations dictate a minimum area of ventilation required dependent on the room, your sales advisor can help you with this.

A standard flat window is called a casement window and all the windows will open out. If you want windows to open inwards you can have a tilt & turn or a fully reversible window, both do exactly what their name suggests.

For a more traditional look on older properties Trent Valley offer a uPVC sash window, these can replace an existing timber sash or upgrade a flat window (maximum width of about 1150mm). The replacement sash can either be a mock sash which looks like a sash but opens outwards like a traditional window, or a vertical sliding sash which operates exactly like a traditional timber sash. The vertical slider will cost about 40% more than the mock sash.

Bays and Bows – can enhance the look of your property from the outside and offer a beautiful vista from indoors. The best way to remember the difference between the two – like a seaside bay you can walk into it and enjoy the view, a bow is an arched window onto a flat wall that you can’t walk into but offers a wide sill for flowers or ornaments. If you’ve got a flat window at the moment you’re best to go for a bow as it’s more cost effective and won’t require additional building regulations.

Finishes – options include of wide variety of colours and wood grain finishes. All colours are called a foil which gives a textured flat colour finish, wood grain gives a textured finish with the irregular colour of wood including knots. A white foil window will be difficult to distinguish from a painted timber window. A wood grain or colour foil finish will cost about 25% more than a standard white frame.

Extras – We can add Georgian bars, leading or decorative glass to enhance the look of the window.

  • Georgian bars can be insert bars (i.e. inside the window panes) or Astregal surface mounted outer bars (i.e. like a timber Georgian window).
  • All windows can be enhanced with leading of various designs, most popular are Georgian leading (rectangles), Elizabethan leading (diamonds) and Cleveland leaded border (double border with rounded corners)
  • Small panes (Top lights) and openers (vents) can be glazed with decorative and/or textured glass, there is a huge choice of colours and designs, ask your sales advisors for more details.

Here at Trent Valley our sales team can take you through the whole process and can advise you on what’s best for your home. Contact us now for more details or a free no obligation quote.
